Olay is a product marketed under Procter & Gamble which is based around facial moisturizer skin care products. The brand is among the few products of Procter & Gamble which is known to have a net sales of more than US$1 billion annually, along with other popular products such as Downy, Ariel, Tide, Pampers, and Pantene. Though Olay were only introduced recently in the Philippine market, it quickly grew to become one of the best beauty and skin care products philippines. So what is Olay other than being marketed under Procter & Gamble?
Brief History of Olay
Before the brand was known as Olay, it was first known as Oil of Olay which was founded in South Africa by Graham Wulff in in 1949. The name “Oil of Olay” was chosen by Wulff as a spin on the word “lanolin”, a key ingredient. That feature that made it popular is its uniqueness. It was unique in the early days because it was a pink fluid rather than a cream, packaged in a heavy glass bottle. Wulff and his marketing partner, Jack Lowe, a former copywriter, had tested the product on their wives and friends and were confident in its uniqueness and quality.
Olay’s earlier marketing strategies were also very unique since it was never described as a moisturizer, nor even as beauty fluid. Nowhere on the packaging did it say what the product actually did. Print adverts used copy such as “Share the secret of a younger looking you” and talked about the ‘beauty secret’ of oil of Olay.
As the company began to market the product internationally, it was decided to modify the name of the product in each country so it would sound pleasing and realistic to consumers. This led to the introduction of Oil of Ulay (UK and Ireland), Oil of Ulan (Australia) and Oil of Olaz (France, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany).
Olay of Today
Olay of today is known for its many products. Some of the most popular ones are the Olay Complete, Total Effects, Professional, Regenerist, and White Radiance. The Total Effects is one of Olay’s most popular product as well as one of the most popular beauty and skin care products philippines. This is because the product was the said to be first anti-aging cream to have been introduced in the world. Olay Regenerist, however, was the latest addition to Olay products in the Philippines. According to many Procter & Gamble, the Olay Regenerist was the best performing anti-aging cream in a 2006 test done by a consumer association.
