Sunburn Balms

Everyone I know has a different way in which they deal with particularly nasty sunburn, including one crazy uncle who just “toughs” it out and a cousin who simply chooses never to leave his house during the day and stays a nice pasty gothic white. Everyone seems to have their own idea of how to find relief, and the concoctions they come up with range from butter to Noxzema. There are also dozens and dozens of different  lotions, creams and gels that are premade and waiting for you at the nearest drug store or super market that promise to help relieve the pain, heal the skin, stop the peeling as well as lighten that burdensome load within your billfold.

Now, if you do not feel like trying out your Aunt Ethel’s Voodoo cure, or spending all your hard earned money on a shopping cart full of lotions, then here are a few simple, cheap and ,most of all, effective sunburn remedies that you can try the next time you go to the local beach and forget to pack your sunscreen.

White Vinegar

White Vinegar is probably one of the most effective remedies around for sunburned skin. First, clean the affected skin with just some plain cool water. Do not rub your skin, or use soap, since this can dry the skin out and end up irritating it further. Pat the skin dry with a soft towel then apply the vinegar. You can apply the vinegar in several ways: you can soak a towel with it and lay it over the burned skin for a few minutes, or you can fill a spray bottle and spray the skin. The vinegar is going to smell for a few minutes, but the odor will soon dissipate. The vinegar should dry in about five minutes leaving your skin feeling much better.

Unsweetened Tea

Applying cool, unsweetened tea (black or green) to your sunburned skin can also help relieve the pain and speed up the healing process. Soak a towel in some tea and then lay it on the sunburned area.  Tea contains various tannins and antioxidants that can help your skin feel much better quickly. If you have some sunburned eyelids, place some cold wet tea bags on them.

Whole-Fat Milk

Whole milk has been used to treat and sooth sunburns for a long time. The milk fat along with the other compounds, help sooth away the pain as well as moisturize the skin and help encourage healing. Wet a towel with the milk and then simply dab it onto the sunburned skin. Wait about a half an hour then rinse in off with some cool water, taking care not to use soap which will dry and irritate the skin.

Vitamin E, Aloe Vera, Apple Cider Vinegar

You can use the preceding ingredients to make a sunburn balm that will just as effective as anything that you will be able to find in a store. All three of these ingredients are pretty easy to find in a health food store and relatively inexpensive. Take three or four Vitamin E capsules, break them open and por the contents into a small bowl. Now, add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and one third cup of aloe vera gel to the mix. If you happen to have your own aloe plant, the fresh gel from it is the best way to go. Mix everything together and then apply the resulting balm to your skin. Do this twice a day for the next few days. This will help soothe the skin and speed up the healing process of even the nastiest of sunburns.

Other way to help the healing

Drink plenty of pure water, eat lots of foods that are rich in Vitamin C, and stay out of the sun until your burn has completely healed.
